World Soccer Headlines

Argentina through without breaking sweat
Argentina maintained their 100 per cent Group A record with a comfortable 2-0 win over a disappointing Greece side. Late goals from Martin Demichelis and substitute Martin Palermo were enough to see off a subdued Greek side whose performance did little to suggest that they would have embellished the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Mexico advance at South Africa's expense
The Latin challenge at this World Cup remains on course after Uruguay and Mexico both qualified for the second round at the expense of South Africa. A forward-thinking Uruguay side claimed the points and topped the group with a 1-0 victory thanks to Luis Suarez's goal just before half-time.

Chile edge past ten-men Switzerland
Mark Gonzalez ended 10-man Switzerland's record run without conceding at the World Cup to put Chile on the brink of the last 16 with victory at Port Elizabeth in Group G. The Swiss, who battled hard despite playing for an hour with just ten men following the dismissal of Valon Behrami, set the new mark having previously kept four clean sheets in Germany 2006.

Ivory Coast win but go out

Defeated Ghana join Germany in the second round
African football celebrated reaching the second round despite defeat by Germany in Johannesburg. Ghana may have lost 1-0 to the Germans in an entertaining encounter at Soccer City, but the result was still enough for the Black Stars to become the first, and possibly only, African team to reach the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup.

World Cup Observations

Some more observations from the tournament so far:

Why does Maicon get so emotional after Brazil's goals? Twice I have seen him holding back the tears, including after scoring this goal against North Korea. Spain Hit Stride Against Negative Portugal

On Tuesday Spain thrashed Portugal 1-0. In the Iberian derby Carlos Queiroz's side were given a hiding in almost every department except the scoreline.

The Spanish have not been wholly convincing in the tournament so far, but in the second-half we were treated to a feast of tiki-taka. This is the name given to a style of play based on reaching the goal through short passes and movement.
