Mandela misses WC opener after tragedy
It should have been a moment of triumph — Nelson Mandela, basking in the cheers as Africa's first World Cup opened. Instead, South Africa's beloved anti-apartheid icon stayed at home with his family Friday in northern Johannesburg during the opening ceremony and game, mourning his 13-year-old great-granddaughter Zenani, who died in a car crash on the way home from a tournament-eve concert in Soweto.

Barcelona reveal huge losses
Barcelona have suffered losses of more than ��77million over the past year, according to the club's vice-president of financial affairs Javier Faus.

Honduras coach Reinaldo Rueda says he is leaving the national team. Rueda says he regrets not be able to take the squad beyond the first round in the recent World Cup in South Africa. The Colombian-born coach is a naturalized Honduran citizen. He says he "is leaving by the front door, so as not to cause disunity" in Honduras.

Totti Not Done Yet

I was interested to read quotes from the great Francesco Totti that he considered quitting the game in the wake of his kick at Mario Balotelli.

The Roma captain's 'tackle' was atrocious, one of those heinous acts you occasionally see in professional soccer, all the more shocking for its rare nature.

Totti was apparently provoked by enfant terrible Balotelli but there was nothing to excuse the extremity of the kick.
