The Green and Whites were too strong in the friendly...

Brazil cruise into the quarter-finals
Can anybody stop Brazil? Holland now lie ahead in the quarter-final in Port Elizabeth on Friday after Carlos Dunga's men brushed aside the challenge of Chile in Johannesburg. Goals from Juan, Luis Fabiano and Robinho gave the Selecao a convincing 3-0 victory. Brazil had beaten Chile home and away in the World Cup qualifying campaign but the Chileans had won hearts and minds in South Africa with their inspiring brand of high-octane attacking football.

Villa on target to take Spain through to the semis
Spain are through to the semi-finals of the World Cup for the first time, after an unconvincing 1-0 win over Paraguay in Johanesburg. A disappointing game came alive just before the hour mark when both teams were awarded, but missed penalties. But, as has often been the case at this tournament, Spain were grateful to the predatory instincts of David Villa, who scored the only goal of the game with eight minutes remaining.

Spain and Chile go through
Pre-tournament favourites Spain are through to the last 16 after defeating Chile 2-1 in Pretoria. Chile's defeat proved not to be terminal as they go through to the knockout stages after Switzerland failed to overcome Honduras in Group H's other game.

Germany outclass England to go through
Germany are through to the quarter-finals of the World Cup after thrashing England 4-1 in Bloemfontein. Goals from Miroslav Klose, Lukas Podolski and two from Thomas Muller ensured England suffered their heaviest ever World Cup defeat. Matthew Upson pulled one back when Fabio Capello's side were trailing 2-0, but that was a mere consolation on a sorry and sobering afternoon for England.

Brazil Lacked Old Spark

For all Maicon's marauding runs down the right, Robinho's spellbinding step-overs and Kaka's silky touches, the 2010 Brazil was by no means a vintage. Dunga's side exited the World Cup after a 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands who will now face Uruguay in the semi-finals.

No Fairytale for the US

The US bowed out of the World Cup after a tight 2-1 defeat to Ghana on Saturday.

They were outplayed in the first-half and went in a goal down after an early effort from Kevin-Prince Boateng. But Bob Bradley's men stepped up a gear after half-time and drew level through a Landon Donovan penalty. The match went into extra-time and a fine strike from Asamoah Gyan won it for Ghana who become only the third African side to qualify for the World Cup quarter finals.

A Victory for the Sport

Not even the most ardent Netherlands fan could argue that they deserved anything more than their 1-0 defeat to Spain in the World Cup final.

Spain dominated for long spells in Soccer City before Andres Iniesta scored the winning goal four minutes from the end of extra-time. I was expecting a cagey performance from the Dutch, who knew before kick off that if they played an open game, they would simply be picked off by their more skilful opponents.

Fifa's Worst Nightmare

Sunday's World Cup second round matches could hardly have panned out worse for the game's governing body Fifa.

In Bloemfontein Frank Lampard's 'goal' was ruled out for England despite clearly crossing the line, while in Johannesburg Argentina's Carlos Tevez was yards offside when scoring his first goal. The referee and linesman knew this, but could not change their decision.

Businesslike Dutch Into Final

If you asked the man on the street before the World Cup who he was most looking forward to watching, the Netherlands would have featured prominently. Their 3-2 defeat of Uruguay sent them into the final for the third time in their history, but who'd have predicted that they would have achieved the feat in such pragmatic fashion?
