Goalkeeper Justo Villar says his Paraguay lineup has a game plan to stop European champion Spain in the World Cup quarterfinals: "Don't give them any space." Defeated Ghana join Germany in the second round
African football celebrated reaching the second round despite defeat by Germany in Johannesburg. Ghana may have lost 1-0 to the Germans in an entertaining encounter at Soccer City, but the result was still enough for the Black Stars to become the first, and possibly only, African team to reach the last 16 of the 2010 World Cup.![]()
Llorente's WCup debut proves decisive for Spain (AP)
Fernando Llorente's World Cup debut for Spain played a big part in turning around the team's fortunes against Portugal. Llorente replaced the fading Fernando Torres in the 59th minute Tuesday, and his introduction changed the dynamic of Spain's attack. Four minutes later, David Villa scored the goal that sent the European champions into the quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory.
Argentina through without breaking sweat
Argentina maintained their 100 per cent Group A record with a comfortable 2-0 win over a disappointing Greece side. Miscellaneous Soccer Commentary
Fifa's Worst Nightmare Sunday's World Cup second round matches could hardly have panned out worse for the game's governing body Fifa. In Bloemfontein Frank Lampard's 'goal' was ruled out for England despite clearly crossing the line, while in Johannesburg Argentina's Carlos Tevez was yards offside when scoring his first goal. The referee and linesman knew this, but could not change their decision.
What's more fun than Oliver Kahn and a big stein of beer?
World Cup Observations Some more observations from the tournament so far: Why does Maicon get so emotional after Brazil's goals? Twice I have seen him holding back the tears, including after scoring this goal against North Korea. The Portugal match is the only one of Brazil's encounters where he has not been found sobbing, the first time since 1978 that the Selecao have failed to score in a World Cup group match. Surely this warrants tears even more.
Keita: The Rivaldo of 2010 When Rivaldo committed one of the worst acts of cheating in World Cup history in 2002, Fifa banned him for two matches. They looked at the video of him feigning injury and threw the book at him.
Barca Stars Should Show a Little Respect Throughout this World Cup, and in the weeks leading up to it, Barcelona's players have seemingly engaged in an orchestrated attempt to assist in Cesc Fabregas' move from Arsenal. The Gunners rejected Barca's first offer for their captain at the beginning of the month, with the Catalans' expected to come in with an improved bid.
