Italy brings a 30-year unbeaten streak
Italy opens the European Championship with the pressure that follows its World Cup victory two years ago. Even a 30-year undefeated streak against the Netherlands doesn't make the Azzurri rest easy. "That's just a statistic like any other," Italy coach Roberto Donadoni said ahead of Monday's match. "We all know what happened in the past, but that doesn't mean anything now. It doesn't let us rest easy.

Croatia has dream start, panicky finish in victory
Croatia got its dream start at the European Championship on Sunday, almost exactly the way coach Slaven Bilic planned it. A fourth-minute penalty converted by Luka Modric, and then tight control of the midfield that gave Austria very little space in the first half, helped the Croats to a 1-0 win over the Euro 2008 co-hosts in Group B.

Portugal 2-0 Turkey
Portugal opened their Euro 2008 campaign in impressive fashion, coasting to a comfortable 2-0 victory over Turkey. Pepe put Luiz Felipe Scolari's side in front on 61 minutes, and substitute Raul Meireles added a second in injury time to give Portugal a well-deserved win.

Euro 2008 preview - Austria v Croatia
Co-hosts Austria will open their Euro 2008 campaign against Croatia today with a mixture of anticipation and apprehension. Delighted to be hosting the competition and enjoying a place in the finals of a major tournament for the first time since France 98, Josef Hickersberger's side have done little in the past two years to suggest that their particpation in Euro 2008 will be anything other than a brief one.
