Valencia beats Schalke 1-0
David Villa scored in the second half to give Valencia a 1-0 win at Schalke in their Champions League Group B opener Tuesday. Villa scored against the run of play in the 63rd after collecting a long ball from Luis Miguel. Villa outpaced Heiko Westermann and shook off a challenge from Schalke's goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, knocking the ball from the goalkeeper's finger tips, before slotting home.

McLeish hails Scotland
Scotland manager Alex McLeish hailed his players following their shock 1-0 win over France in Paris. "I'm very proud of the players. It's great they get a reward for all their hard work.

Scolari apologises for lashing out
Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has apologised for lashing out at Ivica Dragutinovic after Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier but claimed the Serbian defender had insulted his family. "I apologise to Portugal and to the Portuguese people, because I feel at home here," Scolari said in a statement.

G14 oppose Platini's plan
The G14 group, representing Europe's most powerful clubs, will not back Uefa president Michel Platini's plan to award a Champions League place to domestic cup winners. "We're opposed to giving cup winners a place in the Champions League," said G14's general manager Thomas Kurth.

Dwayne De Rosario scored the tiebreaking goal and had an assist to lead the Houston Dynamo to a playoff berth with a 3-1 victory over the Los Angeles Galaxy on Sunday night. By extending their unbeaten streak to five games, the Dynamo (13-7-6) regained first place in the Western Conference by one point over Chivas USA.
