Mancini laments lack of atmosphere

African lightweights on brink of shock success (Reuters)

Hamburger SV closed within one point of Bundesliga leader Bayern on Sunday when Rafael van der Vaart scored two goals to lift the club past Kaiserslautern 3-0. The Netherlands international collected his fifth and sixth Bundesliga goals this season and set up Sergei Barbarez's 50th-minute score in a one-sided away match for Hamburg. Hamburg didn't allow Kaiserslautern, which hasn't scored in four matches, a quality attempt in the match.

Benitez unhappy with penalty denial
Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez was adamant that his team should have been awarded at least one penalty during their Champions League match against Chelsea. He said his players were convinced that a Jamie Carragher header struck William Gallas' arm in the area during the second half of the 0-0 draw at Anfield. "The players said to me afterwards 'yes, it was clear'," said Benitez.

French Ligue One Roundup, Oct. 2
Defending champion Lyon scored three second-half goals and rallied to win 3-1 at Rennes on Sunday, moving four points atop the French first division. After a 10th-minute goal by Swedish midfielder Kim Kallstrom put Rennes ahead, Brazilian midfielder Juninho equalized in the 52nd with a drive from 35 meters and Portuguese Tiago gave Lyon the lead with a tap-in in the 73rd.

Mexico beat Brazil 3-0 to win 2005 Under 17 World Championship (AP)
Mexico won its first Under 17 World Championship on Sunday, beating Brazil 3-0 in goals by Carlos Vela, Omar Esparza and Ever Guzman. Vela opened the scoring in the 31st minute, Esparza made it 2-0 about 2 minutes later and Guzman sealed the victory in the 86th minute before a capacity crowd of 40,000 fans in Peru's National Stadium.
