Brazilian referee given life ban

FC Barcelona cleared over playing Messi
FC Barcelona has been cleared by the Spanish soccer federation of breaking regulations by fielding Argentine forward Lionel Messi in a recent league game. The federation rejected formal complaints by Deportivo La Coruna and Alaves, meaning Messi is free to play in the league. Deportivo and Alaves complained after Messi appeared for the defending champion as a second-half substitute against Zaragoza on Sept. 24.

Jaime Moreno's penalty kick in the 75th minute left D.C. United and the Columbus Crew tied 2-2 Saturday night in the teams' MLS regular-season finale. Crew goalkeeper Matt Jordan leaned left and Moreno shot to his right to remain perfect on nine penalty kicks this season for defending MLS Cup champion D.C.
